Memopal and Security


The main objective of Memopal is to guarantee a high level of security for its users' data.

Digital certificate

All connections between client and server in Memopal's infrastructure are SSL encoded via the server certificate, and the client refuses all connections to a server whose certificate is not reliable to avoid a MITM (Man-in-the Middle-Attack). Authentication only begins after a valid SSL connection has been established, so that if a false certificate is proposed to the client, no user name or password is sent by the client to the server.

Authentication

A user account with the necessary privileges is required in order to install Memopal on any computer. This means that Memopal cannot be installed on a PC to gain access to other people's data.

Encryption

Memopal takes its users' privacy very seriously.
On Memopal, data is transferred encrypted by the client to the server, then saved in an encrypted File System and distributed in blocks via RAID-5 policy. MGFS inspection (Memopal Global File System) can in no way reveal the owner of the backed-up file or the name of the original file. If a storage unit were removed from the Memopal infrastructure, no amount of common sense could provide access to the saved information.
The data structure containing links between the files and the owner is also encrypted. This data cannot be accessed by service staff, not even during maintenance operations.

Memopal and firewalls

Memopal works best when users manage to communicate on the Internet with no blocks or interferences. Company or personal firewalls are often used to guarantee maximum communication security. The main function of these devices is basically to create a filter for incoming and outgoing connections to achieve maximum security.
Memopal works well with firewalls because it uses the same protocol as the user to view websites (HTTP and HTTPS protocol) and is thus compatible with firewalls and proxies.


General computer protection

To guarantee protection to your computer it is essential to use good security standards:

  • Back up important files and folders frequently.
  • Install an antivirus program to protect the computer.
  • Keep your computer's operating system up to date.
  • Be careful when you receive an e-mail attachment; make sure you recognise the format before opening it.
  • Install a firewall.
  • Use complex passwords.
