Searching and deleting
"Last summer I experienced one of the worst moments in my history of computer usage. It was late and I was surfing the net, just waiting to get tired. I was looking through old files and thought I'd delete a few things in order for my computer to run faster. That always helps with the speed. So I began, searching and deleting. Usually I take very much caution and care with this process as well as my computer sending a prompt in order to delete large files but this was different.
I just happened to find a pictures folder, well I actually found several. Having a Mac I keep pictures in the IPhoto folder but there is a main picture folder as well. Sometimes things can get downloaded into the wrong file or I may drag something to the desk top or set up a new folder with the same name, either way that night I wasn't paying attention and deleted all of my 7000 photo's I've been collecting for 8 years.
It was devastating to say the least. Although I am pretty computer savvy I was unable to recover the photos. I did go see several recovery techs however the prices were ridiculous and the guarantees were not promised. When you lose data it's best to not use your computer or the internet because you will erase the erased data completely from the drive. Not knowing this that made it more difficult to recover. So I had to suck it up and hurt. I was able to get a lot of pictures from friends but it's not the same.
Yes I backed up my files often but many many photos were lost for good. My advice to anyone with a computer is back your files up often. I now back up to a hard drive every 30 days sometimes more often. Losing those memories was a major lesson, you never think it will happen to you until it does."
